Pop Culture Rundown

I spent the last week back home in the Midwest, so my newsletter writing time was minimal. Fortunately, there was plenty of entertainment news to pull from, so I present to you (a day late!) a rundown of pop culture highlights.

  1. Already having New Girl withdrawal after last night's finale? Me too. The good news is Max Greenfield isn't going anywhere. CBS announced that they're re-casting the role of Dave, "the nicest guy in the Midwest," in the new comedy series The Neighborhood. That means goodbye to Josh Lawson and hello to more Max.

  2. In the midst of celebrating the many, many TV shows he has on the air, Greg Berlanti was also dropping hints about a potential Everwood reunion during an interview with Variety. While he warned that there's nothing in the works right now, he did sound more optimistic than ever before that the show would return to our screens in the future.

  3. In other upfront news, the internet had a heart attack after Fox cancelled Brooklyn Nine-Nine and then a second one when NBC picked it up again the same day. It turns out the Andy Samberg comedy has quite a few celebrity fans, including Mark Hamill, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Sean Astin and Guillermo del Toro, who have now formed a text chain together.

  4. The Hollwood Reporter released transcripts and videos from conversations with 12 top showrunners. As always, Lena Waithe is a stand-out in the piece: "Almost 80 percent of showrunners are white, straight men. And as the times change that number will hopefully change because that means most of what we're watching is a very similar narrative. Even if people are writing different stories, you can't help it, that's where you come from. So, a big thing for me is if you're a white, straight, male showrunner and you want to tell a story that isn't like your life, that's totally cool but you've gotta have somebody whose life you're writing about right next to you. And you gotta be asking them. Because what I don't love is the white male straight showrunner who acts as if they have the audacity to tell a narrative that isn't theirs without asking for help."

  5. The royal wedding is fast approaching! And of course Lifetime is all over it. The network released Harry and Meghan: A Royal Romance to tell the story of these two love birds and some of the drama that has come along the way. If you don't want to watch the movie in full, you can find the highlights here. If you're wondering what fictional Princess Mia Thermopolis would tell Meghan Markle, author Meg Cabot has you covered. She put together a list of 10 tips for the Royal Wedding Day. I hope she's been practicing her royal wave.
