Pop Culture Rundown
Happy Saturday! To bring you into the weekend, here's a rundown of some of the videos and articles I've been enjoying this week:
The Super Bowl is tomorrow, and while I'm not into the game part of the evening, I do enjoy the commercials. These days, some of the ad spots are released online in advance, which infuriates me to no end. But I'll forgive them just this once for the Hyundai "Smaht Pahk" commercial, featuring Massachusetts natives, Chris Evans, John Krasinski and Rachel Dratch, talking in exaggerated Boston accents about the "pahking" features on the "cah" and the different places in Mass. the "cah" can be "pahked." My boyfriend has a slight Boston accent, and one of my many delights is dropping my r's dramatically when talking about his "cah," so this commercial made me happy.
To continue my Greta Gerwig article coverage, I'm sharing a lovely interview with Greta and Saoirse Ronan, where they talk about how much they inspire each other and want to keep making movies together until they're in their 60s. Greta also participated in Vogue's 73 questions, and I love it.
This week, a group of women announced they were launching a new media outlet called The 19th, a nonprofit organization dedicated to covering the intersection of gender, politics and policy. You can read more about it here and here.
Schitt's Creek is coming to an end soon, and I've been enjoying the many articles published in recent weeks as a tribute to the show's end. Here's one about the sibling relationship between David and Alexis. And in case you missed it, Annie Murphy, who places Alexis, recreated an iconic moment from the series with Kelly Clarkson on her show.
In other TV finale news, The Good Place aired its pitch perfect series finale on Thursday. I've enjoyed devouring interviews with show creator Mike Schur about the series and its end.
One of the many marvelous aspects of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel are the costumes, created by the brilliant Donna Zakowska. She sits down with NPR to talk about the way color tells its own story on the show.
It's a big year for West Side Story. The New York Times Magazine published a profile of the latest Broadway adaptation of the musical, detailing how it's been reimagined for the stage.
Let's end the week on a yummy note. The Atlantic published a great piece about the allure of the KitchenAid mixer. While you're in the baking mood, I keep stumbling upon Instagram and Twitter posts featuring Alison Roman's Lemony Turmeric Tea Cake, and now I must make it myself!!!
