Favorite TV couples
Happy Valentine's Day! 'Tis the season to revisit some of my favorite TV couples. Last year, I paid tribute to the great romances of Jim & Pam, Emma & Captain Hook, Kurt & Blaine, Jane & Michael and Ben & Leslie. But there's always more love to share, so here are some more couples I adore that I wasn't able to fit in last year or that I've discovered over the past 12 months:
I cannot listen to Simply the Best without thinking of David and Patrick's romantic serenades on Schitt's Creek. The first one, a beautiful acoustic guitar performance, solidified this pairing for TV fans everywhere, and the second, used as background music for an apology dance, further demonstrated this couple’s playful energy. Ever since Patrick was introduced in season three, the show was elevated. It still had the same snark, but there was a sweeter center, as we watched these two develop a friendship and then a romance. I adore the way they balance each other out and there's no better way to show that then by watching them say "I love you" in the most perfect way.
Speaking of balance, Beth and Randall on This is Us consistently give viewers a realistic peek into a marriage where two personalities can elevate each other to create a true partnership. Though they had some rocky moments in season two (and you know what, I'm going to go ahead and blame bad writing for that), there's no breaking these two apart, from their fun banter to their parent jokes to the way they always know what the other needs or means.
Here's my controversial pick: Eleanor and Chidi from The Good Place. I know there's been a lot of chatter leading up to the show's finale about whether or not it was necessary to pair up these two characters. Here's the thing. Eleanor and Chidi's romantic relationship isn't essential to understanding or appreciating the NBC show, and their coupling isn't about will-they-won't-they. Eleanor and Chidi are two people who no matter what the circumstances always seem to find their way back to each other. Call it a romance. Call it soulmates. Call it best friends. I don't think you need to view this pair in one of those buckets in order to appreciate their bond or the strange powers of the universe that bring people together. What I love the most about them is that they make each other better and help each other find the answers no matter what. Jeremy Bearimy, baby.
The most short-lived couple around, but come on, you can't expect me not to talk about Fleabag & the infamous priest? Their chemistry is off the charts, but Phoebe Waller-Bridge had the genius idea to give these two more of a bond. They understand each other and have the same sense of humor, but the priest also remains the only one in the show's series who truly sees and understands Fleabag. He listens to what she has to say so much so that he notices if for any second she drifts off into her own little world. Am I the only one who felt like ducking under my couch the first time he looked directly at the camera?
Looking back at last year's list, I was shocked to discover that Nick and Jess of New Girl fame didn't make the cut. What was I thinking? These two oddballs belong together. From their instant chemistry to the perfect buildup towards their first kiss to the real relationship hurdles they faced after they got together to the way that after a break-up and some time they both matured, grew together as friends and found their way back together romantically as well.
