Pop Culture Rundown
It's been a week of me trying to desperately keep up with the mass amounts of TV I want to consume. Hannah continuing to tell men off in the latest episode of The Bachelorette? Check. My season one rewatch of Veronica Mars? Finished. The penultimate episode of Jane the Virgin? The season (and series?) finale of Big Little Lies? Done and done. Despite a setback during all of this -- I saw a huge spoiler for the new season of Mars, because I have no self-control -- I've been enjoying my female-powered pop culture trip. As I take some to digest my opinions on all of the above, I've got a rundown of articles, trailers and fun videos to take you into the weekend. Happy Friday!
As mentioned above, next week is the series finale of Jane the Virgin. Before then, the Los Angeles Times published a peek behind the curtain into show creator Jennie Snyder Urman's creative process, her humble beginnings and her writing style (it surprisingly involves a lot of physical activity). Yvonne Villarreal, the article's author, offered another interesting tidbit via Twitter: Urman took the beloved Villanueva bench back to her home after filming concluded!
Some of you may have seen the amazing quote from the notorious R.B.G. in an NPR interview published earlier this week: "There was a senator, I think it was after my pancreatic cancer, who announced with great glee that I was going to be dead within six months," she recalled. "That senator, whose name I have forgotten, is now himself dead, and I," she added with a smile, "am very much alive." That's a Gins-burn, indeed! The rest of the article is filled with Ginsburg's insights into proposals from Democratic candidates to change the number of judges on the Supreme Court, missing her late husband and whether or not she has any regrets.
Before this week, I didn't know the plot of the musical Cats. And I'm sad to say that now I do, and I'm worse off because of it because that show sounds crazy. You all know where this is going... they released the trailer for the movie version of Cats, and let's just say it's bizarre. It features an all-star cast, including Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellan, James Cordon and Judi Dench, but it also features the all-star cast's faces on skin-tight cat suits. Take a look and see for yourself, but don't say I didn't warn you.
To off-set a bad trailer, let's check out a good one. I was skeptical when I first saw they were making a movie about Mister Rogers, starring Tom Hanks, but this trailer truly warmed my heart. My brother and I used to race home during lunch when we were in elementary school to watch the latest installment of the children's show, so seeing these characters (and puppets!) on my screen again in such a touching tribute hit especially hard. Check it out and get ready to tear up.
In a new mini series from Netflix hosted on YouTube, Tan France (of Queer Eye fame) is giving fashion makeovers to comedians in Dressing Funny. In one of my favorites, he tries to get John Mulaney to ditch his signature suits and dress a bit more his age.
