Golden Globe Predictions
It’s the greatest time of year. Awards season! We kick things off with the most unpredictable show… the Golden Globes air tonight on CBS and Paramount+. Remember last year when the Hollywood Foreign Press was made up of a whole new group of voters? Well this year, it’s also a new group of voters, which means making predictions for Globe winners is a tricky business. But here I go!
Best Motion Picture, Drama
I’m going with the safe choice. Oppenheimer was released way back in July, so it’s lost a bit of momentum compared to fresher releases in this category like Killers of the Flower Moon and Maestro. But Oppenheimer is an impressive biopic from Christopher Nolan that’s sure to be an awards season darling.
Prediction: Oppenheimer
Best Picture, Musical or Comedy
The other half of the Barbenheimer equation! Biggest competition here is Poor Things and The Holdovers, but if Barbie is going to win a big award anywhere, it’s most likely going to happen here.
Prediction: Barbie
Best Director, Motion Picture
Bradley Cooper? Martin Scorsese? One of the TWO women nominated (yay to Greta Gerwig and Celine Song)? I’m going with my Best Picture (Drama) pick on this one.
Prediction: Christopher Nolan — Oppenheimer
Best Screenplay, Motion Picture
The Oscars made a big announcement earlier this week, placing Barbie’s screenplay in the Adapted category, instead of Original, where its been campaigning. But everyone is in one category here! I have gone back and forth on my selection here! Let’s see if Greta Gerwig and her husband can take this one home.
Prediction: Greta Gerwig & Noah Baumbach — Barbie
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama
Continuing my Oppenheimer trend… I’m going with the man with the hat and the titular role.
Prediction: Cillian Murphy — Oppenheimer
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama
Here’s where I’m betting on a win for Killers of the Flower Moon. Lily Gladstone has received a ton of buzz for her leading role and has already picked up several smaller award show wins.
Prediction: Lily Gladstone — Killers of the Flower Moon
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy
This is a lock. If Emma doesn’t win, there’s no telling where the night has gone!
Prediction: Emma Stone – Poor Things
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy
This likely comes down to Paul Giamatti or Jeffrey Wright, but I think the Golden Globes will likely go with Giamatti here, potentially building momentum for what some are wondering will be an awards season resurgence for The Holdovers.
Prediction: Paul Giamatti — The Holdovers
Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture
Probably wishful thinking on my part, but I think if Ryan Gosling gets a win, it’s going to happen here. And think of the speech he would give! This category promises to be very interesting. You’ve got a purely comedic performance with Gosling’s Ken. The person with all of the Oscar buzz back in July, Robert Downey Jr. A breakout favorite in Charles Melton. I can’t speak to William Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo in Poor Things or to Robert DeNiro in Killers of the Flower Moon (yet), but they’re obviously heavy hitters who deliver strong performances in their respective films. If Gosling loses, I think it’ll be Melton’s win.
Prediction: Ryan Gosling — Barbie
Best Supporting Actress, Motion Picture
Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who you may know from Only Murders in the Building, is so heartbreakingly wonderful in The Holdovers. She’s starting to pick up more and more award show buzz and I think she’ll take this one home.
Prediction: Da’Vine Joy Randolph — The Holdovers
Best Television Series, Drama
Did you forget there’s TV too? Did you forget that we haven’t showered Succession with awards for its final season?
Prediction: Succession
Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy
I *think* this comes down to The Bear and Abbott Elementary, but I saw a Vanity Fair article predicting that Amazon’s Jury Duty would pull out a win here. So who knows what might happen! Last year Abbott Elementary beat out The Bear, and even though The Bear’s second season was (in my opinion) stronger than its first, I still think Abbott goes home with the gold.
Prediction: Abbott Elementary
Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, Drama
I haven’t seen The Last of Us, and I’m sure that Pedro Pascal is just incredible, but I would really love to see Kieran Culkin take this one home for his outstanding performance in the final season of Succession. In perhaps an ominous sign of things to come, I just realized I accidentally marked Pascal instead of Culkin as a winner in my prediction spreadsheet… putting it correctly for the record here:
Prediction: Kieran Culkin — Succession
Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Drama
Sarah Snook has been so fun to watch throughout Succession’s entire run but there’s something extra special about her performance in these last few episodes.
Prediction: Sarah Snook — Succession
Best Actress in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy
It’s Ayo Edebiri’s year! Her toughest competition will be Quinta Brunson, who ironically plays her sister on Abbott Elementary.
Prediction: Ayo Edebiri — The Bear
Best Actor in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy
With Ted Lasso delivering a terrible final season, voters likely split between Steve Martin and Martin Short for Only Murders in the Building, no one watching Shrinking (I did! I swear!) and Barry losing any sense of momentum due to long breaks between seasons, this should be a win for Jeremy Allen White.
Prediction: Jeremy Allen White — The Bear
Best Supporting Actor, Television
Like its movie counterpart, I could see this category going in a couple of different directions. Matthew Macfadyen is consistently great on Succession. Ebon Moss-Bachrach broke out from the rest of the ensemble in season two of The Bear. And there’s the dark horse pick of James Marsden if the voters are feeling like rewarding Jury Duty.
Prediction: Ebon Moss-Bachrach — The Bear
Best Supporting Actress, Television
I’m not very confident in this selection but I tend bet on Meryl by default. I’ve seen some outlets predicting another Hannah Waddingham win here but I’m still so annoyed with the final season of Ted Lasso that I can’t bring myself to predict it will pick up any awards.
Prediction: Meryl Streep — Only Murders in the Building
Best Limited Series, Anthology Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television
Prediction: Beef
Best Performance by an Actor, Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Prediction: Steven Yeun — Beef
Best Performance by an Actress, Limited Series, Anthology Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television
Prediction: Riley Keough — Daisy Jones & the Six
Best Original Score, Motion Picture
Prediction: Ludwig Göransson — Oppenheimer
Best Picture, Non-English Language
Prediction: Anatomy of a Fall — France
Best Original Song, Motion Picture
Prediction: What Was I Made For? by Billie Eilish and Finneas — Barbie
Best Motion Picture, Animated
Prediction: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy or Television
Prediction: Trevor Noah — Trevor Noah: Where Was I
Cinematic and Box Office Achievement
How is this award being decided? By numbers? By vibes? No one knows! This *should* go to Barbie (based on numbers and vibes), but I’m predicting a Taylor Swift upset here. She’s going to be at the ceremony. It’s the only concert film nominated against movies. And it’s a flashy choice for this first-time award.
Prediction: Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour
