Golden Globe Predictions
Happy New Year and Happy Award Season! William and I are back to weigh in on nominated movies, which we've seen a lot of, and briefly touch on the TV nominees, which we've barely watched. The Golden Globes are tonight on NBC and Peacock and with a new voting body, we're not too sure what to expect. We speculate! We probably over predict success for Everything Everywhere All at Once! We wonder if The Crown will succeed because it always has (and invite special guest Sam to give her take on the new season)! Here are our predictions:
Annie: Do you want to say anything about The Golden Globes?
William: Here’s what I’d like to say about The Golden Globes. We know nothing. This is a new group of voters for the most part.
MOVIES
Best Picture: Drama
William: Tár’s not going to win. That feels like the only certainty. I think it’s likely going to be between The Fabelmans and Top Gun: Maverick, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Avatar: The Way of Water or Elvis won. Isn’t that wild?
Annie: I agree. I was having a similar battle in what I was choosing between. I feel like Elvis has a strong chance here, but it’s hard to predict because we don’t know the voting body.
William: If this was the typical Globes, I would predict Elvis.
Annie: I’ve been torn between Elvis and The Fabelmans in my prediction. I have a hard time seeing Top Gun: Maverick winning.
William: It’s taking every ounce of me not to predict Top Gun, because The Fabelmans has been doing so badly everywhere else. It feels like The Fabelmans should be the safe guess, but now it feels risky. I think Avatar is fourth most likely to win. I really wonder if Elvis could win.
Annie: I’m talking myself out of my Fabelmans prediction as we’re speaking.
Annie’s Prediction: Elvis
William’s Prediction: Top Gun: Maverick
Best Picture: Musical or Comedy
William: I think it’s between Everything Everywhere All at Once and Banshees.
Annie: I agree. I’m predicting Everything Everywhere. It’s hard to say how much weight The Golden Globes carry, but I think if Everything Everywhere does well here it’s going to start an Everything Everywhere movement throughout awards season.
William: I’m worried Everything Everywhere is getting over-nominated, and now Banshees is now the underdog. What happened? The highest acclaimed movie of the year is now an underdog?
Annie: I enjoyed both movies and would be fine with either one winning!
Annie & William's Prediction: Everything Everywhere All at Once
Best Actor: Drama
William: I think it’s between Austin Butler and Brendan Fraser. There’s love for Elvis at The Golden Globes and there’s not love for The Whale.
Annie: And they often reward people in biopics, so that tees Austin Butler up really well. And he was fantastic.
Annie & William's Prediction: Austin Butler (Elvis)
Best Actress: Drama
William: I think it’s Cate Blanchett. I don’t know who else it could be, probably Ana De Armas, because what is she doing there?
Annie: It would be so old-school Golden Globes to give this to Ana De Armas for Blonde.
William: There are multiple nominations for Tár, including Best Picture, and Cate Blanchett is the entire movie. So if they liked it enough to put it in the top five, that means they liked her.
Annie & William's Prediction: Cate Blanchett (Tár)
Best Actor: Comedy
William: It seems like it will be Colin Farrell for sure here. He has front runner status. He’s been under-awarded in his career and there’s a lot of love for this movie.
Annie: I agree, and I would love to see him win this because I thought he was fantastic in Banshees. Do you think there’s a close second?
William: No. I would be really surprised if anyone else won.
Annie & William's Prediction: Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin)
Best Actress: Comedy
William: I think this is Michelle Yeoh.
Annie: That’s who I have too.
William: I guess number two would be Margot Robbie or Emma Thompson.
Annie: Especially splitting the Comedy and Drama categories, I think this is Michelle Yeoh’s to win and she faces a tougher battle in other award shows that don’t split the categories.
Annie & William's Prediction: Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All At Once)
Supporting Actor
William: Ke Huy Quan is sweeping critics groups. He’s a very obvious front runner right now. It seems like if there was an upset it could potentially be Eddie Redmayne because the two Banshees actors will split the votes [in this category].
Annie & William's Prediction: Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All At Once)
Supporting Actress
William: This is an interesting one. Jaimee Lee Curtis has been an outspoken supporter of the Globes coming back.
Annie: Nepo baby Jaimee Lee Curtis.
William: I wonder about Angela Bassett potentially winning, but I just don’t believe someone from a Marvel movie is going to win an acting award at an awards show. But if it were to happen, it would be the Golden Globes. I see anyone but Carey Mulligan winning.
Annie: I also have Jaimee Lee Curtis winning. My number two prediction is Kerry Condon for Banshees.
William: The only thing is… is Everything Everywhere going to win three acting awards. That’s unheard of.
Annie: Maybe there will be more of a Banshees showing than I’m thinking, but Everything has so much momentum.
William: Are voters spreading the love [with their votes]?
Annie & William's Prediction: Jaimee Lee Curtis (Everything Everywhere All At Once)
Best Director
Annie: Now I’m getting nervous, because I have Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert winning for Everything.
William: This is the most open ended category. I could see any person winning. The most surprising would maybe be Martin McDonagh, because even though people like Banshees, they feel like it’s more of an achievement in screenplay.
Annie: I could see Avatar winning in the Director category.
William: I’m going with Everything as well, but I’m very tempted to put Baz Luhrmann. If this was the old Golden Globes, I would say they’ll give Baz Luhrmann two awards! But this is a new batch of voters.
Annie: Which man is going to win!
William: Or two men.
Annie: You’ve made me more confident in my pick.
William: But is Everything going to win three acting categories, Best Comedy and Best Director?
Annie & William's Prediction: Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (Everything Everywhere All At Once)
Best Screenplay
William: I think this is where Banshees wins. I think it’s the screenplay of the year to a lot of people.
Annie: I personally think it’s the best screenplay. And then I think the second most likely win is Todd Field.
William: I think Women Talking will win Adapted Screenplay at The Oscars, so it’s crazy that it’s under-nominated in every awards body. I don’t understand – it’s one of my favorite movies of the year.
Annie & William's Prediction: Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin)
Best Picture: Animated
Annie & William’s Prediction: Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio
Best Picture: Non-English Language
Annie & William’s Prediction: RRR
Best Original Score
Annie & William’s Prediction: Justin Hurwitz (Babylon)
Best Original Song
Annie’s Prediction: Hold My Hand (Top Gun: Maverick)
William’s Prediction: Lift Me Up (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever)
TELEVISION
William: The TV stuff is hard to guess. Sam, you’re the only one who has watched the new season of The Crown. What do you think of the Supporting Actress category?
Sam: This sounds really shallow. I just think Elizabeth Debicki is hot and that’s it. Not that she’s bad by any means, but I’m not floored. Some seasons of The Crown, some people feel like they’re doing impersonations, like Margaret Thatcher (Gillian Anderson). Josh O’Connor did not feel like an impersonation. Emma Corrin did not feel like an impersonation. Elizabeth Debicki is good at it, but it feels like an impersonation.
William: What do you think about The Crown in general [this season]?
Sam: I think there’s no buzz. I don’t think people are watching it. It feels like the weakest season.
William: Have these award shows just been waiting for another show to come in and beat [The Crown]? Maybe Severance is getting some of these wins. Succession isn’t here [either].
Annie: Do we think there’s any world in which House of Dragon wins in these categories? They are nominated a lot!
William: Here’s an interesting one. Drama Actor… do we think Bob Odenkirk will win for the final season of Better Call Saul? I think he’s going to win.
Annie: I have Adam Scott.
William: TV is more interesting than the movie categories.
Annie: Anything else you want to say?
William: Who cares about The Golden Globes? Anybody? But I’m excited.
Annie: I’m excited too!
