Carole King's Tapestry, a perfect album
I was in elementary school, when my mom gifted me Carole King's Tapestry CD. I believe it was right before a road trip and I remember sitting in the backseat of the car with my Walkman listening to song after song. I'd already been introduced to her via my Gilmore Girls music education, thanks to her updated rendition of Where You Lead, which serves as the show's theme song. Little did I realize at the time, she also was responsible for penning one of my all-time favorite songs to listen to as a child: The Loco-Motion.
Yesterday, Carole King released a video of herself singing a modified version of You're So Far Away, with some lyric updates to fit the "shelter in place" policies. And that started me on a listening binge! I played Tapestry, which is an all-around PERFECT album, over and over again. I listened to the recording of her 1973 Montreux Jazz Festival performance. I quizzed my mom about whether or not she played Smackwater Jack on repeat when I was growing up, because something about that song felt infinitely familiar to me, as if I'd heard it before I even remember hearing it.
On this Thursday (is it Thursday???), treat yourself by revisiting the King. Her poetic lyrics and soothing piano riffs will put you right at ease, as you reminisce about the first time you heard Tapestry.
